Black Prince Tank - Churchill infantry tank MQ number A43, Black Prince. The tank was assigned to experiment with the development of a new Churchill tank with a longer and wider hull and QF 17lb – 76mm main gun. It is named after Edward the Black Prince, a famous 14th century military leader. Even before the Sherman Firefly and Cruiser Comet tanks used the same gun and proved their production process on the French battlefields, the tank was obsolete. Taken at the Tank Museum in Boynton, UK, in 2017.

The Black Prince was a British attempt during WWII to load a powerful 17 pdr gun into the loyal Churchill. How did you deal with it? Of course, just build a bigger Churchill!
Army leadership envisioned this Super Churchill design to lead the breakthrough with its powerful 17-pounder gun alongside infantry. However, engineers quickly learned that building bigger wasn't always better. By simply creating a larger version of Churchill, the Black Prince simply once again inherited many of its current service problems.
Because of this, engineers struggled for years to perfect a tank design with few supporters, and by 1944 the standard was considered largely obsolete.

Before the start of World War II, the concept of the cruiser tank and infantry tank categories was developed in Great Britain. Cruiser tanks are designed to maneuver and break through. As a result, these vehicles are less armored and faster than infantry tanks.
Infantry tanks, on the other hand, are designed to support infantry during assaults and are therefore more heavily armored. For the cruiser role, the British Army assigned vehicles like the Crusader and Cromwell, while tanks like the Matilda 2 and Churchill were given the infantry tank role.
With its thick armor (thicker than the Tiger tank) and low speed, the Churchill was well-suited for the infantry tank role. Photo taken at Bobbington Tank Museum.
The problem was that by the end of 1941, the success of the German 88mm guns on the battlefield was becoming increasingly frustrating for the army. British Army officials wanted similar firepower for its tanks and began work on retrofitting the 17-pounder to armored vehicles, including the Che Rachel.

But it wasn't until 1943 that Vauxhall, one of Churchill's manufacturers, was asked to turn its drawings into a real prototype. These won't arrive until 1945.
During this time, the A30 Challenger, designed to carry a 17-pounder gun on a Cromwell hull, was already in an advanced stage of development, with prototypes produced in 1942. But in late 1943, the introduction of the Firefly gave the British a better-designed tank to meet their firepower needs.
The Firefly carried a 17 pdr gun on a Sherman chassis, which was adequate and reliable, making the Challenger cruiser tank irrelevant. This photo was taken at the Tank Museum in Bobbington.
Why Vauxhall only reinforces the same Churchill design probably has more to do with efficiency than a belief that the Churchill design itself is perfect.

Due to the Churchill's relatively small turret ring, the 17 pdr would not fit the normal Churchill. A larger turret ring was required, forcing the rest of the tank to increase in size to accommodate it.
