Despite its "F-for-fighter" designation, the F-105 was designed and purchased to provide the USAF with an aircraft capable of delivering nuclear weapons. But when the Vietnam War began, the Thunderchief emerged as the USAF's best tactical bomber for a "conventional limited" conflict and became a powerful tool for strategic strikes against the industrial heartland of North Vietnam. In this strike role, the F-105 was widely targeted by MiG-17s and MiG-21s, and Thunderchief crews encountered these adversaries more frequently than any other American aircraft. Forced to develop innovative tactics to compete with their smaller, more maneuverable adversaries, the F-105 pilots used their speed and skill to destroy 27.5 MiG-17s – a number greater than the F-4 Phantom II crews achieved they are supposed to protect them. in 1966-67.

Although it did not appear in official records, the first downing of an F-105D MiG occurred at the end of a 25-kilometer chase over Chinese airspace on May 10, 1966. or Chinese Communist MiGs, leading to increased policing of American air traffic in the northern border areas of North Vietnam by EC-121D airborne radar surveillance aircraft.

On 29 June, Maj. James Kasler, operations officer for the 354th TFS, led 46 F-105s in a new campaign to strike gasoline, oil, and lubricant (POL) depots, conducting an unprecedented raid near Hanoi. A flight of "Crabs" from the 421st TFS/388th TFW provided Iron Hand SAM suppression and had only one SAM site with GM-45 Shrike missiles and Mk 4 Folding-Fin air-to-air missiles fired from LAU launchers. -3A were rolled when four. The MiG-17s began backing up at about 5,000 feet as the flight returned to strike power at 480 knots. 'Krab 4' belatedly saw them coming in and issued a warning which the main element of 'Krab' a mile ahead apparently did not hear. 'Crab 3' (Maj Kenneth D Frank) and '4' missed the turn, the lead MiG fired after them but missed 'Crab 3'.

The MiGs continued and lined up over the main "Crab" element just as they were spotted by "Krab 1" (an F-105F piloted by Major Richard D. Westcott and Captain Herbert L Friesen). After his element broke sharply to the left, he called for fire and an ammunition dump. Nine 23mm and 37mm guns hit 'Crab 2' (F-105D 58-1156) Maj Fred Tracy. One of the 23mm rounds forced the pilot's hand off the throttle and abruptly canceled the afterburner. They also cut out most of Tracy's cockpit instruments, large areas inside the left cockpit, oxygen equipment and weapons. The projectile then remained in its AC source, fortunately without exploding.

"I maneuvered to get my pilot on the MiG, pulled the trigger and saw 20mm rounds fly over the MiG's left fuselage and wing. Its left wing folded over its tail and made a sharp turn. At about 2,500 feet, it entered the cloud." Maj Tracy saw about ten apparent hits. Intelligence sources later found the remains of the MiG-17 and confirmed that the plane had crashed. Tracy, on a mission to vet a new Wild Weasel pilot, became the first F-105 MiG fighter.

All four pilots of the 'Crab' plane were involved in a dogfight. The lead F-105 was hit in the tail by a second MiG and would have been more damaged had Maj Frank not fired at it, forcing the VPAF pilot to abandon his firing pass. All pilots then opened fire on the enemy aircraft, including a burst of 200 rounds from 'Crab 4', but only Tracy's shots are known to have hit home.

Thud pilots loved it. Apart from test pilots who were paid to find bugs, the F-105 Thunderchief Group seemed to have no enemies.
