The next-generation stealth bomber was launched Friday from arms manufacturer Northrop Grumman's plant in California, in the presence of top US officials.

China's Harsh Reaction To Australia's New B 21 Stealth Bomber

The Air Force plans to purchase at least 100 B-21 aircraft, each priced at $700 million, said spokesman Northrop Grumman.

The unveiling of the new bomber comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions between the United States, Russia and China over the war in Ukraine and territorial integrity in Taiwan.

Strategic bombers from Russia and China conducted an eight-hour joint patrol over the western Pacific on Wednesday, demonstrating continued military cooperation between the two countries.

Moscow and Beijing are currently developing China's Xian H-20, a strategic stealth bomber expected to compete with the B-21, and Russia's nuclear-capable Tupolev PAK DA.

The B-21 can take off without a pilot, but the Air Force said it "has the capability but has not decided to fly without a crew member."

"The B-21 Raider is the first strategic bomber in more than 30 years," U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a prepared statement at Friday's event.

Featuring a "flying wing" shape similar to its predecessor, the B-21 can carry conventional and nuclear weapons around the world with long-range and aerial refueling capabilities.

WASHINGTON — Next year will see the most anticipated new aircraft launch in recent history as the US Air Force unveils its next stealth bomber.

However, 2022 is expected to bring tough choices and retirements as part of the next fiscal year's budget proposal.

The B-21 radar is expected to be available to the public in 2022, although there is no specific date. In a few months, the Raider will make its first test flight.

Did Northrop Grumman Just Unveil A New 6th Generation Fighter Jet?

"We're going to do something special when we unveil the B-21," Air Force Chief of Staff Brown said at Defense One's online Defense Situation Conference in September.

This will be the first public unveiling of a new Air Force bomber 30 years since Northrop Grumman's B-2 Spirit bomber was unveiled to the public in November 1988 at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. The first aerial flight took place the following year, in July 1989.

But Air Secretary Frank Kendall suggested on Dec. 9 that the Air Force could continue playing the card in the Raider through 2022.

"You're not going to see a lot of it," Kendall said during the online Defense One panel. “We don't want to give the enemy an advantage. We will recognize that we are doing this and let the public know and let Congress know. But we will not say more about what we do in public.”

Lockheed Martin Has Revealed For Its New Next Generation Air

Five B-21s are in various stages of production at Plant 42, Kendall told the Air Force Association's Air, Space and Cyber Conference last September.

Todd Harrison, an aerospace and defense budget specialist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, expects the Air Force's 2023 budget request (early next year) to also provide more details on the B-21. Harrison said on Dec. 10 that this could include more information about the agency's procurement plans and hints at how quickly the planes could be deployed.

But the 2023 budget request could also include some difficult trade-offs as the Air Force attempts to retire older aircraft to free up resources. Coming budgets are expected to be tight, leaving little room to modernize services as quickly as needed. Kendall and other Air Force leaders have recently asked Congress to allow retirement of aging aircraft that they say will not be of much use in advanced combat against an adversary like China.

And based on lessons learned from the Air Force's series of power planning exercises, the upcoming budget submission may include more sweeping changes to the force structure than previous budget submissions.

"Looking at [FY] 23, I'm really focused on this," Brown said in a Defense News interview in November 2020.

The Air Force's efforts to introduce aerial tankers to bridge the gap between the KC-46A Pegasus and next-generation tankers may also begin in earnest next year. The Air Force issued a source search request for the KC-Y or bridge tanker program in June.

Three months later, Lockheed Martin unveiled the LMXT aerial refueling tanker, a modified version of the Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft. The tanker will compete with the KC-46 to produce up to 160 bridge tankers.

In an interview with Defense News on December 4, Brown said the timing of the bridge tank competition has yet to be determined, but the process has begun.

Lawmakers are planning a 'middle course' for the Space Missile Warning Fund. Congress has awarded the Space Force an additional $450 million in fiscal year 2023 for missile warning and tracking in space. Does this mean that lawmakers support her strategy?

The Air Force and Space Force are targeting AI readiness by 2025. To move beyond AI readiness, the outgoing AI and data chief said the Air Force Department must continue investing in training and infrastructure. The US "Long-Range Strike-B" (LRS-B) heavy bomber program is estimated to cost between $55 billion and $80 billion for as many as 100 aircraft. The NGB was originally slated to enter service around 2018 as a low-profile, subsonic, medium-range, medium-payload "B-3" type system intended to augment and potentially replace, within a limited range, the US Air Force's aging bomber fleet. . Target delivery is now in the mid-2020s, and Boeing and Lockheed Martin have announced they will be collaborating on a long-range strike bomber program. Boeing becomes the prime contractor.

But the price tag is an issue because the Pentagon says two other components of the strategic nuclear force—the Navy's Ohio-class strategic submarine fleet and the Air Force's Minuteman 3 nuclear missiles—also need to be modernized. .

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday strongly supported the Air Force's plan to build a next-generation strategic bomber, arguing that it would help deter nuclear war and maintain America's global advantage.

The Long-Range Strike Bomber is as stealthy as today's Batwing B-2, but faster and much cheaper at $550 million per system. I should say "system" instead of "aircraft" because the LRS-B is actually a collection of multiple manned and unmanned aircraft that can be networked into one tactical unit.

Congressional Research Service analyst Jeremiah Gertler reviewed the projected funding trend line in a recent report and concluded that the Air Force must have already completed most of the development work, even prototyping, on the bomber on a classified "black" budget.
