The main mission of the F-102 Delta Dagger is to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft. It was the world's first supersonic all-weather jet interceptor and the USAF's first operational delta-wing aircraft. The F-102 made its first flight on 24 October 1953, and entered service with Air Defense Command in 1956. At the peak of its deployment in the late 1950s, the F-102 had 25 ATC squadrons.

In a wartime scenario, after the electronic equipment aboard the F-102 locates an enemy aircraft, the F-102's radar will guide it into attack position. At the right moment, the electronic fire control system automatically fires the F-102's missiles and missiles.
The F-102 flew in the Vietnam War, carrying out fighter patrols, bombers, and MiGCAPs to rescue downed aircrews from aircraft and helicopters.

As Davis explains in his book F-102 Delta Dagger Units, MiG activity was sporadic in 1965 as Vietnamese People's Air Force (VPAF) forces continued to refine their tactics against the Rolling Thunder attacks that had begun in March. Later that year, the more capable, missile-armed MiG-21 was placed into service with the 921st Fighter Squadron (FR), bringing the total number of MiG aircraft to 75.
There was a risk that American sub-fighters might encounter MiGs along the North Vietnamese border, although many pilots never saw one of the hundreds of planes over enemy territory. Along with their escort, F-102 pilots occasionally received warning of approaching MiG aircraft, and the operation to set up the famous Lima Site 85 on a hill in Phou Pha Thi, Laos was one such occasion. The powerful radar and heavy green TACAN platform was installed to provide Rolling Thunder attacks deep into North Vietnam with better radar coverage than the US Navy's maritime radar interception craft.

Heavy equipment to set up the site had to be transported by CH-3 and CH-47 helicopters to the top of the 5,600-foot karst block mountain. Two Udorn-based F-102As were sent to escort the helicopters across the Jars Plain toward the mountains. A MiG alert was received from the US Navy's 'Motor Pool' offshore radar warning ship and the USAF College Eye Alert EC-121 aircraft. An F-102A led by Captain Robert Donaldson was flying towards the MiG-21s from the Dien Bien Phu area.
The lead "Deuce" pilot climbed into the afterburner and picked up the MiGs on radar 30 miles away, readied his missiles and waited for permission to fire from the GCI controller, the sole source of permission to attack the MiGs. 20 miles had not yet been cleared, and as the pilots approached visual range they saw the MiGs turn and descend. Captain Donaldson suspected that the "Deuces" might have been lured into a fight with a large number of MiGs, but the USAF pilots were told to return and protect the helicopters.
A less favorable MiG-21 encounter occurred on 3 February 1968 when two 509th FIS F-102As flew an EB-66 escort mission at 36,000 feet near the North Vietnamese-Laotian border at Sam Niue. Maj AL Lomax was the flight leader, with 1Lt Wallace Wiggins as his wingman. At the VPAF's Noi Bai airfield, 921st FR pilots Pham Thanh Ngan and Nguyen Van Coc (the first VPAF ace to end the war with nine kills, including five F-105Ds) flew their fourth intercept mission of the day. As they neared the Laos border, Ngan thought he saw an EB-66 ECM in the distance, but closer inspection revealed two F-102As. Lomax spotted the MiGs and fired back at three AIM-4D Falcons, all of which missed. Encon maneuvered into the blind spot behind Wiggins' aircraft (56-1166) and fired an R-3S (K-13A 'Atoll') missile that stuck to the launch pad, but another of his weapons hit the F-102A's tail. Van Gogh also launched a missile, but it failed to guide properly. The MiG-21F-13s were then ordered to break off the engagement.

Wiggins reported a problem with his plane and when Lomax checked it, he found the body of an unexploded 'Adolin' protruding from the rear body of the Deuce. Lomax tried to find the MiGs again, but they quickly left, and moments later saw Wiggins' plane explode. Evacuation was not attempted. It was the only F-102 loss to a MiG and was a reminder of the problems a 'Deuce' pilot faced - mainly because missiles took 16 seconds to set up and minimal visibility from the cockpit - when surprised by an expert. The MiG-21 flew.
